Why I Started TAL (The Art Lounge)

English follows the Japanese text. :) はじめまして！SEILAです。 TAL (The Art Lounge) をスタートしようとした、きっかけについて。 私は、日本の小学校に入る直前まで、フィリピンのマニラで暮らしていました。 当時の子供の頃の私にとっても、フィリピンは、日本とはまた異なる種類の豊かさを持つ国でした。 スペインやアメリカ文化の影響を受けた住宅街、 庶民的な暮らしの中にもお手伝いさんが居たり、近所の人たちとの共有もしくは個人の庭にプールがあったり、どこか華やかさや余裕がありました。 一方で、綺麗な街とそうでない街の差は大きく、子供ながらに、この国にはおおきな経済的課題がある事も、なんとなく感じていました。 大人になって社会でさまざまな世代の人と接する中で、フィリピンという国が、時には限られた極端にネガティブなイメージだけで語られている場面に遭遇し、違和感を覚えるようになりました。 もちろん、それも事実の一部なのだと思います。 でも、私が知っている綺麗で豊かなフィリピンもまた、確かに存在している。 その違和感は、アートの世界でも同じでした。 少し古いデータですが、2021年〜2022年の現代美術オークション地域別売上高では、フィリピンは世界14位。 国際的に評価されるアーティストも数多く存在しています。 それにもかかわらず、日本ではフィリピンのアート市場に関する情報はまだ非常に少なく、現地の多くのアーティストが知られていません。 私はそこに、大きな可能性を感じています。 TAL（The Art Lounge）は、その距離を縮めるために始めました。 単なる作品紹介サイトではなく、フィリピンの感性や文化を、できるだけ日本の感覚に合わせながら届けるキュレーションプラットフォームです。 日本とフィリピン、両方の文化に触れて育ち、単なる機械的な翻訳ではない「橋渡し」ができると思っています。 海外では既に評価されているのに、日本ではまだ十分に知られていない そうした将来性の高いアーティスト、現時点では入手しやすい価格帯の作品を紹介し、両国のアート市場の成長を促進したい。 そして同時にアートを通して、フィリピンという国の見え方そのものも、少しずつアップデートしていけたらと思っています。 これは、私にとって、自分が生まれた国と育った国、その両方への愛情から始まった長期的な文化活動です。 もしほんの少しでも共感していただけたら、 この挑戦を、見守っていただけたら嬉しいです。 SEILA ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー Hello! I’m SEILA. I’d like to share what inspired me to start TAL (The Art Lounge). Until just before entering elementary school in Japan, I lived for a while in Manila, Philippines. To me as a child, the Philippines felt like a country with a different kind of richness from Japan. Neighborhoods influenced by Spanish and American culture. Even in relatively ordinary communities, it was common to have household helpers, and there were shared community pools or private pools in people’s gardens. There was a certain elegance and openness woven into everyday life. At the same time, the contrast between wealthy and struggling areas was striking, and even as a child, I could sense that the country faced many economic challenges. As I grew older and met many different people in Japan, I gradually began to feel uncomfortable with how the Philippines was sometimes spoken about only through extremely negative and limited stereotypes. Of course, I understand that those perspectives are also part of reality. But the beautiful and vibrant Philippines that I know also undeniably exists. I felt the same disconnect in the art world as well. Although this data is slightly old, the Philippines ranked 14th globally in regional contemporary art auction sales from 2021 to 2022. There are also many internationally recognized Filipino artists today. And yet, in Japan, information about the Philippine art market remains extremely limited, and many local artists are still largely unknown. I see enormous potential there. That is why I started TAL (The Art Lounge). TAL is not simply a website introducing artworks. It is a curation platform that aims to present Filipino sensibilities and culture in a way that resonates as naturally as possible within a Japanese context. Having grown up exposed to both Japanese and Filipino cultures, I believe I can serve as more than just a translator — but as a bridge between the two. Many of these artists are already appreciated internationally, while still remaining relatively undiscovered in Japan. I hope to introduce promising artists and artworks that are still accessible today, while also helping encourage growth and deeper connections between the art markets of both countries. At the same time, through art, I also hope to gently update the way the Philippines itself is perceived. For me, this is a long-term cultural project born from love for both the country where I was born and the country where I was raised.
