Le noir est une couleur: Hommage vivant à Aimé Maeght is the catalogue for an exhibition held at the Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul, in the South of France, from June 30 to November 5, 2006. The title means “Black is a color” in French. The exhibition brought together works by great artists, all centered around the theme of black. Fondation Maeght is a bright and open museum filled with natural light. The contrast between that luminous space and the many works based on the color black was deeply striking. Although the exhibition was composed entirely of black works, it never felt monotonous. Instead, it revealed an astonishing variety of blacks — refined, expressive, and full of different moods. I was still a student at the time, and the exhibition left a very strong impression on me. It made me feel that black is not only a color of heaviness or darkness, but can also carry elegance, calmness, even a sense of quietness within the heart. It was an exhibition that powerfully revealed the positive side of black. For quite some time, this book became by far one of my favorite art books. 295 pages / 26 × 22 × 3.3 cm / Hardcover / Purchased at Fondation Maeght, France
